Questions on Petrel Endform Assembly

Submitted bychrisail1946 onFri, 04/19/2019 - 09:07

Appreciate any help with my concerns below concerning build of Petrel. Thanks  Chris

1.      I’m ready to assemble the bow and stern endforms. After assembly, the lower edges of the endforms will project outside the envelope of the frame. Do the edges need to be beveled before the bow frames 1,2 and 3 are mounted?

2.      Any chance there’s a photo of this assembly?

Just Starting: Attaching Forms to Strongback

Submitted byMichael74 onFri, 04/19/2019 - 08:35

I just ordered Great Auk kayak plans and read Nick’s book, “The Strip-Built Sea Kayak” as first steps.  I also ordered a 2x4x16 foot LVL construction beam to use as the strong back (I read that this was a better option than a 2x4 because it is more true).  My naive question is how I attach the forms with actual 2” by 4” cutouts to the LVL, which has 1 1/2” by 3 1/2” true dimensions.  Should I try to center a 1.5 x 3.5 inch hole on the form instead of cutout the 2x4 hole, or just try to shim the larger hole to the smaller LVL?

How much sanding before glassing?

Submitted byneurichmond onSun, 04/14/2019 - 16:04

I am wondering how much sanding needs to be done before fiberglass goes on the hull?  I have some areas that are not really drips but where the epoxy has run some so that it is thicker in these areas (not a lot but is visible from a side view).  Will these areas be covered and hidden after fiberglass and epoxy coats are laid down or do I need to deal with these before I get to that step?

Thanks!

New to Kayaking: Where to start.

Hello everyone.  I'm new to kayaking  and kayaks.  I'd like to build build my own.  I live in west central MN with access to many small and large lakes including lake of the woods and some small rivers with small rapids.  I'd like to build a kayak that would would be a good around boat.  One I can use on afternoon river outings and weeklong fishing trips in the Boundry Waters.  Is this possible out of a kayak?  If so which one?  Thanks for any and all I fo you can supply.

Does 3/4 inch nylon webbing shrink or get longer due to temperature change?

When the temperature gets low, the hatches get loose. Is the nylon webbing expanding or is the kayak shrinking? When the temperature is up everything is fine.

A Book Worth Reading

Submitted byJohn VanBuren onWed, 04/03/2019 - 20:43
Hi, I just finished reading a book that was originally published in 1950; "The Canoe Boys" by Alastair Dunnett. It is about the travels of two young men along the Scottish Coast in the 1930's. I checked and the book is still available from Amazon. The "Canoes" they used were three-section, skin on frame, wood hybrid kayaks. Reading it was time well spent. John Van Buren

Questions on Petrel Strongback and skin finish

Submitted bychrisail1946 onSun, 03/31/2019 - 12:41

Starting build and have a few questions of PTPlan sheet 2 of 10, 2005 nick shade drawing for the Petrel.

1. Is there a video or photos of the SB and partial build? How about links to a few  recommended instructions. I'm new to this and appreciate any help. I am working from and very appreciative for the build videos of the Petrel Sport, but it's SB is oriented horizontally along the 4" axis and the PTPlan is designed on a vertically oriented SB.

Hey!
A short presentation, lives in Sweden.
Have probably been thinking about building a kayak for at least 20 years.
Thought that now is the time, have thought and read a lot what kind I would like to try to build, have now decided to build a skin on frame.
Essentially intends to use Andi Röders description / instructions (http://www.naturligt-ute.se/pdf/kajakbygge.pdf).
Continuation follows, all tips and information are received with gratitude.

Reducing size for Skin On Frame Qajaq

Submitted byMagotony onThu, 03/28/2019 - 07:59

Hi Everybody,

I'm building my first one Qajaq (skin on frame style). The problem is my design sets the lenght about 17 feet, but my car is small for this size...So I wondered if is possible to reduce the lenght (but not the wide) up to 15 and 20 inches without loose excessive flotation or other important characteristics (guess I loose hidrodynamics).

What would you do?

Thanks for your help.
