Skeg - Cloth or just epoxy?

Submitted byRich D onThu, 11/22/2018 - 12:05

I am building an adjustable skeg using marine ply for the blade. I applied glass cloth to each face of the plywood before cutting the skeg to shape Now I need to seal the edges. Is just epoxy enough or do I need to wrap cloth around the edges? It seems it would be difficult to conform the cloth to the shape especially in the slot for the pivot pin.

Fast and stable flat-bottomed kayaks

So, I’m about to start a new skin on frame kayak build, and I’m really fascinated with the Mackenzie River delta kayaks that the Inuvialuit built. I’ve never built one because money has been tight and I wasn’t sure if they would be a particularly useful rec boat. Then, I found a review of the Rockpool Taran 16, which seems to have a similar hull:

First Folding Kayak

I have designed my own version of a folding boat, inspired by the Oru Kayak. My design has a few advantages. The design is "pure origami." If made with cardboard or coroplast (which folds), it does not require any cuts to a 6' x 12' rectangular board. If made with wood (which is rigid), it requires cutting the 6 x 12 rectangle and joining with waterproof joints. The design is simpler than Oru's.

I have a kit from Chesapeake Light Craft that I want to sell. I have been storing it for many years and have no time for this project. If anyone could recommend a place or site to sell it through that would be greatly appreciated. I have tried to sell it via Craigslist with no luck.

I live in Spring Grove, IL 60081. I seem to recall a place in either Fort Atkinson or Whitewater Wisconsin that held classes on canoe and kayak building classes. I went to the Chamber of Commerce website for both of these towns but could not find a listing.

strip questions

Submitted byPaul@water onMon, 11/05/2018 - 01:48

I'm going to make a Mystic River Canoe from plans and was wondering how important it is to have 18' strips. Or, should I just attach smaller strips? I guess I can certainly mail order them if it comes to it although wonder if it is cheaper to mill my own..

I have a router table and tablet saw but it seems sort of difficult to put  a bead and cove in 18' strips.. but is this how it's done? On the other hand, if I connect a bunch of smaller strips, I imagine it will have color variations.

Kevlar Eddyline Falcon 16

Don't know if these Forums are strictly for Building Kayaks, but is anyone familiar with the Kevlar Eddyline Falcon? I have found one for $800 and was wondering what ya'll think. Would like to build a Wooden Kayak just out of its appearance. But realistically, how do they compare in performance to modern materials?
