Post-build questions (forms & strongback)

Now that my kayak is complete and out of the workshop it looks a lot smaller. On the other hand, the workshop has never seemed bigger!

I've tried -- to no avail -- to convince my wife to that with a few coasters and doilies the boat would look great in the middle of the living room.

Making a SOT from a SIT

Submitted byrafacacho onMon, 04/16/2018 - 14:14

Hi, new here, I am a fisherman, handyman who loves woodworking and the ocean. I usually paddle to fish in the sea. I actually own two plastic SOT, wich I want to get rid off.

Heres the question, I want to build a SOT wooden kayak, can I use a SIT sea kayak  plan and modified it?  Making a large self bailing cockpit area with drain holes. Intead of sitting in the bottom, I' ll be sitting like 3 or 4 inches above. I like greenland models, I want it to be fast, and able to cut  the surf, but stable at anchor for fishing.

Thanks!

knot

OK, I am down to the last thing I don't know about kayak building :))

I have seen photo's on this forum (can't find them now of course :() of the bow/stern carry straps that are tied together in such a way that they form a handhold 3-4 times the diameter of the rope itself with a rope end sticking out each side of the handhold. I have perused several web sites looking at knot photo's but don't seem to find it. I am sure it would help if I knew the name of the knot, which I don't.

Will someone please point a finger in the direction I need to go :)
Thank you,

very cool to find this new  forum, thank you nick, we all appreciate your help over the years.

this is a boat project i drew for a boat builder here in the north west.

i started with a table of off sets, you can see these measurements in the album link.

this boat is made out of aluminum as you can see but it could be made out of wood.

Petrel Play Lawn Launch

Submitted byPaul Harker onFri, 04/13/2018 - 20:40

With the help of this forum, Nick's books and videos, and despite my numerous mistakes, I've completed my first kayak, the Guillemot Petrel Play. The personalized coaming was to cover up the fact I cut and glued the cherry strips incorrectly. The wide maple accent around the recess was another oops fixer. I cut the hole in the deck too large.

Now to make a paddle or paddles, and wait for warm weather.

striper as a skin on frame

Submitted byCreariveGirll onFri, 04/13/2018 - 10:19

good day gentle people:  This is a weird one so I wall give some history.  Four years age I started building a Newfound Spirit, ready to buy the strips and so on.  Then my brain swelled up and tried to kill me, almost did, coma for a week and such.  Now I am disabled and can not do the things I am trained to do, so no money for the strips, and 40lbs is a bit much for me these days.  So the spirit is on indefinite hold,  Lots of people are willing to lend me one but i do not care to wear out my welcome so something of my own that came from my hands is wanted.

Deck to hull joint

Submitted byJayBabina onTue, 04/10/2018 - 12:18

I was reading the caption on Etienne Miller's photo which said that he was wetting out the deck and using that cloth overhang to join the deck to hull. Maybe this the way to go? Sand and glass the underside first. It would necessitate a perfect fit without the usual forcing we go through with packing tape. Maybe Etienne you can comment on that. I kept thinking about the logical steps.
