I'm just back from Maine where my friend Gerry and I were scouting out venues for an event we are putting on in September. The Schoodic Sea Kayak Retreat is an occasion to get out on some spectacular waters in sea kayaks (both wood and otherwise).
I've been paddling the waters in this part of Maine for over 30 years. It was one particular trip in this area that really set the hook for my desire to make my own sea kayak. I was paddling a white water kayak from Frazer Point out to Mark Island and Turtle Island and just had so much fun that I decided that I really needed a boat specifically designed to navigate these kinds of waters. I had been paddling various other kayaks for 10-15 year prior to that. The next year I went back with a sea kayak I had built myself.
About 10 years ago a Navy Station out at the end of the Schoodic Peninsula was closed down. The facility was given over to local administration and is now run as a non-profit: The Schoodic Institute. Since about that time, I've been thinking it would be a fantastic base for some kind of sea kayaking event.
This year, with the help of Gerry, I finally pulled something together. I am really excited about it.
Schoodic Point is part of Acadia National Park, one of the most popular parks in the country, but its a part that is rarely visited. The waters are characterized by high tides and rocky shores. The video below shows where I like to paddle, but there will be trips suitable for anyone with enough experience to paddle in their kayak for a couple hours at a time.

We had a great time at the Schoodic Sea Kayak Retreat. A great group of paddlers made the trip up to Winter Harbor, Maine for the weekend. We had beautiful weather and nice conditions on the water. Big enough to be interesting, but safe enough to learn.
