Hi Chuck,

I've done it both ways. I made cradles to hold my boats vertically so that I could fit 3 boats on the roof instead of just 2. The cradles hold the boat rock-steady, even though I don't have much distance between bars. I took both boats to last year's Newfound Rendezvous; a 13 hour trip on the heels of Hurricane Floyd. Lots of crosswinds, but the boats made the trip just fine.

I've got photos of the cradle construction on my website.

Ross

: O.K., now that I'm getting ready to cartop my shiney new boat to some serious
: water, the question becomes: Which orientation is best? I suspect keel
: down, since the natural motion of the hull against the air pressure
: created while the vehicle is moving will want to push the bow up, and that
: this can be counteracted by the bow tie-down. I'm certain there will be
: some flex no matter what at 65mph, but am I correct that keel down is the
: way to go? Thanks. Chuck
