Wooden Padeyes Problem??

I made some of the padeyes described in Nick's book.
out of oak. The two hooks for the hatch,I made by cutting a padeye in half.
Not sure if thats the right way?
Anyway the hooks popped off under pressure from the bungies.
I used cabosil thickened epoxy and the padeyes seem to be OK.just the half size hooks are the problem. I'm wondering if they failed due to the smaller glueing surface on the base of the hook??? The epoxy was in the freezer over night but it seemed OK after thawing .

Hope someone can shed some insight on this dilema.

Thanks for any help

Terry
