: I finally got an opportunity to get my kayak project on the water :)
: at Crescent Beach, White Rock, BC

: It is a ply frame SOF version of the Ken Taylor Igdlorssuit kayak, built with
: 1/2" ply frames, SPF stringers, and 8 oz nylon from G. Dyson. The
: skin was sewn with dental floss, and sealed with yellow artist oil-tinted
: urethane. I used red oak for the laminated coaming, and the deckline
: sliders. Decklines are 3/16".
: 16' 6" x 21 1/2". Completed weight is 23 pounds! It needs a closed
: cell foam bulkhead footbrace, and backrest.

: The paddle is a carefully selected SPF 2 x 3 from RONA :) with a little bit
: added to the edges to bring the width up to 3 1/4". It is 88"
: long, weighs 30 oz.

: To continue the theme of frugality, I bought a metre of lightweight nylon
: -$3.84 at W-Mart :) -and sewed up a sprayskirt, using the instructions
: from Shawn Baker's web pages. It fit well, nice and tight, and kept the
: water out.
: As today was my first time in a sea kayak, I did not push it, so the
: gunwhales never got below water :)
: It was much more stable than I had originally feared, and seemed to go where
: I wanted it to. My only paddling experience was almost ten years ago in a
: Recovery kayak I built, and a 10/11 ft river kayak.

: I could not be happier with it. Thanks to Bryan H for his work with the
: Freeship file and answers to questions, and thanks to all who have offered
: hints and encouragement. Thank you to Ken Taylor, Duncan Winning, and the
: builder of the original. To Tom Yost for the great building pages and
: advice. A big thanks to Daren N for all his help with the station
: drawings, advice, and ripping the 1/16" oak laminations for my
: coaming!!

: What appear to be bumps protruding at the 2nd and 4th stations are the pool
: noodle pieces I jammed in sideways to serve as temp. footrest and
: backrest...

Boat looks great :)

may I ask how much pigment you added to the urethane?

Bill H.
