Best way to find ideal length is to obtain 10 to 50 paddles of various length and blade configs, then see which one you prefer after three or four years of heavy paddling.

I'm serious. What's perfect for one person is a hideous freak show to the next. And what about blade design? Type of shaft? When you manage to find your ideal paddle, will it still be a vision of loveliness in your next boat? What if you fall in love with Greenland paddles?

I think there's something to be said for adapting yourself to the equipment you happen to have on hand, too. I have locked myself into a paddle length for my Greenland sticks because it fits in my truck. Hey, it keeps me grinnin', and there're no laws being broken.

Here are just a few of my paddles, in case you think I wasn't being serious about trying a whole mess of 'em...
