How do you take the thickness reading?

Hey Marc, I used a magnetic pull-off mil guage which only works on ferrous metals, obviously. I measured the area on the original panel where I didn't apply fresh clear, and the area where I did. I only achieved around 1/2 to 3/4 of a mil which isn't enough. To do this I would need around 1 1/2 mils so i'll do further tests.

This pic is one after I wet sanded and polished. The finish looked great and I am encouraged.

Also, there are digital electronic mil gauges available, but I'm not sure on the accuracy of them on non-ferrous metals, or wood kayaks for that matter.
