: I guess I have a different attitude than most of you guys. I enjoy
: building boats not driving and sorting through lumber piles. I
: order 1"10"x10' clear cedar from the local lumberyard.
: It arrives the next week - perfect boards, $40 each:)

After the first boat assuming you'll build another which most do, you'll be on the lookout for wood. I rarely stop at a lumber yard anymore without looking to see what they have in stock. Sometimes a really nice piece or two show up that you can take home for future use.

Also not everyone's idea of clear cedar is the same as mine and often the grain with clear cedar is at a 90 degree angle from what you really want. You're not using the board as it comes, you're ripping strips off the edge, so the grain you get is 90 degrees to the grain of the board.

If you get nice quarter sawn boards, you'll end up with flat sawn strips, perhaps not what you were after unless you like the wild grain of flat sawn.
