Ah, isn't language a wonderful but challenging thing? As often, I think we are on the same page, but the words get in the way.

I realize that you could use more than one width of strip in a single boat, and there are often compelling advantages to doing so, such as when using particularly narrow strips where hull or deck curvature is thereby easier to follow. However, to keep the butt joints simple, within each "strip width category", width should be consistent. In other words, among strips which will meet one another at butt joints, width should be accurately consistent. Otherwise, you get stuck planing strip edges to avoid gaps when the next strip overlaps the stepped butt joint.
