The light finally goes on! So the "tabs" are just short uncut sections that continue to support the covers til the rims are molded. Maybe 4 places about 1/2" long, close to the corners? The rims will then follow exactly the contour of the cover. Very clever!

: If you'll be molding hatch rims with epoxy and fiberglass, consider
: leaving 'tabs' when cutting the hatch openings so the covers can
: remain in position while molding. Cut the tabs after the rims
: and any hatch reinforcing is made.
