: Leather gloves slow the hand damage :)

: I'm perfectly capable of doing the same thing to myself, have in
: fact done it several times, then after bandaging my hand (again)
: I put on the leather gloves till I forget the next time.

The good-ole ubiquitous utility knife (box cutter) what we over here call a Stanley Knife, has always been my nemesis. I use them for everything and become too complacent from time to time, leaving bits of flesh around the place every couple of years. I have one or two in every workspace, there are probably 25 around the place, always high up. I dread the idea of a child wondering in and getting hold of one of the merciless little buggers.

Gloves are ok with hand tools but with machine tools not a good idea if they give a false sense of security.
