I make those, too. Great gifts for yuletide.

A yard of 60" polarfleece (R) or the generic equivalent, makes 4 lightweight scarves, or two thicker ones. For light weight scarf, cut pieces 9" wide by the 60" width. Leave the ends square, or make cuts about 1/2 inch apart, and tug on them to stretch them into a fringe edge. No sewing needed. For heavier scarves, cut the fabric 18" by 80", fold in half, and sew closed the long edge. Turn it inside out to hide the seam edges and fringe the ends like I just described.

When fleece is on sale for $5 a yard or less (end-of-season sales going on now) I buy a few yards of neutral colors and knock out a $10 scarf in about 5 minutes for about $1.25. With a straightedge and a roller cutter--same tools used for cutting bias glass strips--I knock 'em out like an assembly line. Start now, only 300 days to Xmas.
