: I know there is a place in Conn. that specializes in white cedar.
: Normally you need to search the places that specialize in
: hardwood to find decent WRC, but in the spring and summer most
: big box lumber yards stock it for decks, but it tends to be full
: of knots, have to search to find sections of boards that are
: knot free.

In my area I can buy fairly reasonable WRC in the form of fence planks at my local hardware/lumber store. Length is limited to 6' or 8' but I don't mind scarfing. The thickness gives me the width of strips I need and it is slash cut which yields strips with vertical grain. I lose some to knots but I can use about 75% on average so it works out cheap compared to taking a long drive and paying higher prices for better stuff. That suits me as I am both lazy and cheap ...

I don't bother with bead and cove, I prefer to bevel. I cut a slot to fit a strip in the edge of a piece of waste, this hold the strip while I plane the bevel. I plane the entire strip to the shallowest bevel first, then roll it out to the ends until I get the angle I need. This takes only a few minutes and gives me something to do while the glue on the previous layer is setting up. I also smooth the inside of the strips before gluing them and try to keep the inside edges aligned. This minimizes sanding on the inside: sanding the outside is easier!
