I've done it both ways, the first Yost SOF I encapsulated the frames in epoxy, works fine. On all the others I've not epoxied the edges and that works too, I do oil the frames. I fill any gaps in the ply with thickened epoxy though.

Encapsulating the plywood is fairly expensive and adds a couple pounds of weight to the boat. Since the frames are not normally in contact with any water I don't see the point in using the epoxy on them and if the boat does get wet inside it is allowed to dry completely, so there really isn't a problem with rot.
