Just finshed dying two boats tonight with Tintex at $2.50 a box. They've been selling it in grocery store isles since I was a kid. I love Coreys selection but have been having problems getting it across the border to Canada (customs doesn't like unmarked packages of powder so they keep it or hold it for a very long time). Anyway, I wanted a black kayak and was very disappointed when I first started applying it (very light). I put a second coat on the next day and it evened but still looked like faded blue - bluejeans. Just when I decided I would have to live with it I noticed alot of residue on the bottom of the bucket so I shook it up and gave it one more try, spraying and working it in really well with a dye soaked rag. It is not black but better than ever would have imagined. With the new spar varnish I am trying which is very yellow, it is now a beautiful dark but translucent greenish-black. My brother tried the dark brown with the same experience and results as me. He used two packages and then to speed things up added a package of dark red because the store was out of brown. I can't stop staring at these boats; just gorgeous! Besides the colour they both have a long straight grain wood look. My brothers brownish red one with it's tight thick skin really looks like a wooden boat. I'm not sure if it was the brush or the rag that created that or just the way the dye is. We're both using ballistic nylon by the way so we were a little worried wether or not it would work but it actually states in the directions that it is ideal for nylon (not polyester though). I will try to post pics this weekend if I can figure out how. (I do know how but have to post my pics on a site this one will accept)
