Interesting idea.
My method is mostly to lift the staple clear of the surface on one run, then catch with a pliers and pull straight out and drop the pulled staple into a jar.
Any that fall to the floor get picked up with a wee door magnet on a stick. Which is also handy for fishing keys, etc out of deep-ish water or other liquid.
