I'm using the same select pine on my first kayak. I used two 12' lengths for the gunwales, spliced them with a vertical joint (Makkusiineq), and cut one end to length so the joint sets just aft of the cockpit. It took some planning to make sure there were no deck beams or rib mortises interfering with the joint. I pegged, lashed, and even glued the joints with Urac 185. I haven't seen that glue mentioned in kayak builds, but it's similar to Resorcinal boat building glue and much cheaper. It's waterproof and an excellent gap filler, so it is tolerant of poor mating surfaces. It also doesn't creep over time like yellow wood glues. The only downsides are that it is a bit of a hassle to mix the resin and powder by weight, shelf life is a year (unless refrigerated), and there is a minimum 65 degree curing temperature (a problem for winter garage builds unless you bring the parts indoors for gluing like I did). Urac is the favored glue for all-wooden laminated longbows, where the joint is under tremendous stress. Seems ideal for kayaks.
