The only reason I didn't use epoxy is at that point in the build I had never worked with epoxy before, and I wasn't sure about it. I am Very familiar with more traditional wood glues however, and confident in my methods. I think the Tightbond III should do fine since it is waterproof, but I'm sure epoxy would be good too.

If you go this route I recommend a jig to line everything up. Start with a wide board at least a couple feet long for the base. Then lay a stringer down the center, and place a narrower board on each side of the stringer. This board should be twice the thickness of the stringer (or stack 2 layers).
With these boards attached you can remove your stringer, and you have a trough that will hold and align your stringers as you glue them. I then penciled in lines to show where to butt the two pieces together, as well as marks to show me where to drill my screw holes. That way every stringer is the same, which helps with the looks a bit.

The great thing is the screws do all the clamping so as soon as you screw one stringer you can take it out and do the next. It goes very quickly.
