The method I now use for cutting scarf joints in thin strips relies on my bench sander. It has a table in front of the disc so I clamp a guide to that and just feed the end of the strip in. It is fast and repeatable and the strip pieces go together precisely. The sander was definitely worth the few dollars it cost and is one of the busiest tools in my workshop.

I have a simple jig for gluing scarfs: it consists of a ply base with a straightedge glued along the back, and a couple of toggle clamps. I set the strips up dry, check there is no bump or dip across the joint, mark the edges so I can put it back in the same place, then unclamp the top strip, glue and reclamp. This holds the strips in alignment while I clamp across the joint: the base has a notch cut out to allow that. Once the joint is clamped the strip can be removed after a minute or two and the next joint glued up.

My current boat is built with 6 foot long fence planks, perfectly good WRC and surprisingly few knots for the price, BUT a lot of jointing, so the jig and sander are getting a workout!
