: I was fly fishing for some bass yesterday when I slipped on a bank.

: least a month, this coming up on one of the better kayaking
: months around here. Any ideas on how I might get on the water
: with a foot in a cast? I know I won't be able to cartop the boat

Do you have a small solo canoe or kayak - something with a long cockpit? The cast will make you clumsy, which is a problem I have at 71 as arthritis has cut into my agility, so I abandoned my kayaks in favour of a small open canoe that I designed myself. I find a wet shallow-water entry is safest, especially at this time of year when the water is still close to freezing temperature. The trick for me is to wear boots, wade in to about 15" deep water, put the boat behind me and just sit down. While I'm balanced on three points - feet and butt - I brace the boat with one end of the paddle resting on the bottom while I get my feet up. No way I can get back from the water so I stay in streams and rivers where I don't have far to swim to a bank.

You probably should avoid getting the cast wet but can't wear boots. There's plastic wrap but a trip to your local health equipment store might be more useful, surely this situation has come up before. I wouldn't recomend trying to waterproof the cast with varnish as I think casts have to to breath. Later in your recovery it may be possible to get the cast changed to something more sports oriented.
