: Lake Michigan's bottom has a weird shape too, really deep in the
: north (350 meters) and relatively shallow in the south (150
: meters). Waves build heading south that are barely noticed in
: the north. Still a heck of alot deeper than Lake Erie but
: nothing like the big lake.

Western Lake Erie is very shallow, but sometimes this is a hinderance. It doesn't take much wind to push up a good chop or better really quickly because it's so shallow.

Wooden Boat had an article about Great Lakes passenger steamers in the latest issue. It had a sidebar about Charles Dickens' visit to the United States in 1842, and his passage on the steamer Constitution from Sandusky, Ohio to Buffalo, New York. He wrote: "It's all very fine talking about Lake Erie, but it won't do for persons who are liable to sea-sickness. We were all sick. It's almost as bad in that respect as the Atlantic. The waves are very short, and horribly constant."
