Hi Todd,
That Enamel is oil based. I've used external emanel on three SoF's and had no problems with brittleness.
The thing with enamel is that it isn't as srcatch resistant as some poly's. It also needs occassional re-coating. A quick sand and clean and a coat, maybe once a year depending on sun fading.
