Strip: Varnish

Hello All,
I am in the process of refinishing my Outer Island and was wondering how you guys go about varnishing the second time around. I used 100 grit to get most of the varnish off, however I noticed that there are lines in the surface of the gelcoat from sanding that will probably show up after varnishing. What would you recommend the next step be? I can see going to maybe a 220 grit next to reduce these lines but I'm at the point that I may be going a little too deep into the gel coat in some places.
