Well...if you leave the boat outside with the hatches open in the direct sun you should expect damage, shouldn't be a big surprise.

Still a coat of varnish on the inside isn't a big deal to apply. Doing it on the entire inside shouldn't be required, most don't leave the hatches open outside and the odds of direct sun getting to the underside of the deck is pretty remote too.
