: Is it safe to put the gunwale scarf right in the middle of the
: kayak? Therefore, two 8' boards and one scarf will make one
: gunwale. Or, should I put the 8' board in the middle and scarf
: onto each end?
: Thanks,
: Bill

A well done scarf joint is stronger than the wood around it ... I have tested to destruction scarf joins .. the wood gives way before the glue joint. I use 5 degree taper for scarfs .

Remember to match the gunnels for symmetrical flexibility .
