: Hi Mike,

: While a two part paint like Awlcraft (there are alot of these from
: other companies) will certainly work, they have isocyanates
: (sp?) in them and really should be sprayed, so specialized
: equipment have to be used to allow this to be done safely. Like
: using a supplied air respirator, not exactly cheap. You'd be far
: better off having a professional shop paint it for you, like an
: automotive body shop.

: There are always marine paints which are oil based, mostly.

: I've got one boat here that I painted with latex and it's held up
: ok, also took a whole bunch of coats to get it to cover.

: On my friend's boat we'll be trying Behr house paint, has an oil
: based primer and a latex finish coat, we'll see how that works,
: Home Depot sells it and he works there.

Having used Awlcraft, I can say that it would be terrible for use on a SOF. I only brought it up as a point of comparison between the cost of solvent-free linseed oil paint and professional finishes. Jamestown Distributors sells a gallon of base for $185, a quart of the required catalyst is $70, and the proprietary reducer is another $70. All of these products say "FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY" in bold lettering. I sprayed in a spray booth with a full-face respirator with supplied air using HVLP equipment. This is truly not something a home builder can likely do at all, let alone safely.

Coelan's great to work with, though. Goes on really nicely, easy to control, self-leveling, super clear, super tough.

Moral of the story- don't spray professional industrial coatings at home (unless you have a spray booth, the right spray equipment, and a respirator with supplied air).
