I think you're right about technique being the issue if you skinned your thumb on the coaming. If you skinned it on the hull in front of the coaming I'd say it might be equipment. Get yourself a skirt right away. You can make a Greenland-type aquilisaq pretty easily from neoprene or nylon from the pattern in Chris Cunningham's Building the Greenland Kayak, and I believe there is also information about making float bags.
