: I'll definitely be putting the cockpit centered on the roof racks
: in the future. I should have realized somebody might have been
: trying to tell me something when the coaming is 30" long,
: and the roof rack bars are 30" apart. Coincidence? Yeah,
: sure. But that coaming sits on two frames, which will take the
: brunt of the load when they're sitting directly above the
: bars... *sigh*. Hindsight is 20/20, ain't it?

I run mine with the middle of the cockpit on one bar, and the forward deck stringer resting on the other. That way I can put it cockpit down so it doesn't fill with water/bugs and it doesn't rock side to side as its got three points of contact. If you are worried about deflection mid coaming you can put a couple braces in (my boat is aleut style). On my car this set up also causes the largest part of the boat to be aft of the rear bar so that if I get a good cross wind blowing the boat sideways it will weathercock back into line. (I strap the bow and stern with ropes, but out my way 70-80km/h side gusts happen a lot and tend to move things round a bit.).
