Alex, you are a man with my own thinking. I did build a pair of kayaks with my own footbraces. Photo below. It was designed after kayaks I saw in the Philippine Islands.

They worked fine for normal paddling, but rolling and rough water require a better foothold. I ended up installing the Sea Dogs in these kayaks as an easy opt-out, but would really like to build my own strong functional adjustable footbraces if someone can come up with a plan.

The solution in Nick Schade's book won't do for me due to complexity, but I'll keep looking and thinking. Maybe Kurt Maurer can come up with something we can steal. He's good at that.
