: Hi Bill, I'm new to building kayak's and hope this isn't a stupid
: question but, shouldn't there be 17+ forms for a 17'+ boat Best

Even if the forms are spaced at 12", there are fewer than 17 for a 17' kayak. if you fitted every possible form at that spacing there would be 16, one less than the number of feet in the kayak length. Quite often the first and last forms are too small to be worth fitting on the end stems, so that leaves 14. It is also possible that the next ones in will also be so small as to be useless, so you might only fit 12 on a 17' kayak with 12" spacing. Usually it would be 14, so it would only need a very small increase in the gap between the forms to get down to 11.
