: This is a litltle silly but I'm have a problem scarfing sheer
: strips. I have a jig so both strips are cut at the same angle by
: the pull saw, but when I glue (Titebond II) them together I am
: coming out with a slight angle. I need them as perfect as
: possible since theyll be the first ones on the boat

: How do you all clamp scarfs so that you get decent strips?

The jig should ensure that the scarfing angle is the same for both pieces. If not the result will be a kink or hump (1). It is also important that the scarf be cut so its ends are square, failure to do this will result in a propeller-like twist (2). Finally, even if the scarf is cut perfectly, it can twist during the gluing stage resulting in a bend in the plane of the scarf (3). Looking at your assembled strip, it should be possible for you to see which problem you have, and what you need to do to fix it.

As well as a jig for cutting scarfs, I use a jig for gluing them to ensure they are aligned correctly. Although mine is fairly elaborate, all that is really needed is a piece of ply with a straight edge fastened to it. The flat ply will highlight problem (1) or (2) because the two faces will not mate, and the straight edge avoids problem (3). It helps if a U-shaped bite is taken out of the ply so the piece can be removed from the jig after the clamps are put on.
