: I am looking for info on george dyson aluminium baidarkas..
: how have these lashed aluminium craft held up over time?
: how heavy are the frames, lighter than all wood?
: any other comment appreciated...

: generally on baidarkas- how similar to the line drawings of past
: aleutian ones are modern plans?

: cheers
I can only speak for the ones that I've seen, and those were all built by George himself. He has half a dozen in his shop, in Bellingham, and they are superbly built and exacting in every detail. They seem to have held up well, though they are currently shop bound, rather than in use. In any case, they are far more sturdy than any SOF I have ever built, and I wouldn't hesitate to use any of his older boats.
I can't speak for their weight, but I daresay they are heavier than wood framed boats.

There aren't so many modern plans for baidarkas, and not that many historic examples (that I know of). So who's to say? It varies with the designer. I don't recall how authentic George's were, but they at least have the look.
One could certainly make an authentic replica by following the lines in David Zimmerly's book (or in Harvey Golden's upcoming book).
