80 grit sandpaper is about the smoothest you'll get it, but, that will still leave fuzz. The fuzz will eventually wear smooth.

Actually, you may be missing having the sandpaper mounted on an appropriately rounded shape, as freehanding it won't help, much. A lot of times, I use a piece of 80 grit mounted on the curved handle part of a 3M sanding block. I also have a piece of the Dragonskin that Bill mentioned, spray-mounted on a piece of half-inch foam. I can hold that in various curved shapes, to work some pieces. Some guys mount abrasive sheets to a Pringles can, when shaping thigh braces, etc...
