: Hi People,

: I have a Chesapeake 18 that was my first build many years ago ,
: hanging in the rafters doing nothing , as I now use either my
: Shearwater 19 Baidarka or my Point Bennett when seakayaking .

: Which is'nt often , now that I'm primarily into Flatwater Marathon
: Racing.

: So, I'm considering building a pair of Amas (floats) and turning
: the thing into a trimaran with a 7 m2 windsurfer rig on it.

: Anybody out there had any expierience with this sort of thing ?

: I have done a lot of sailboat racing, and done one trip in the
: Pacific , and we have sails on both Baidarka and PB, so the
: sailing thing is covered.

: My main question is will 7m2 be enough to get this thing really
: going or will I need more sail area ?

: Thanks

: Bris Paul

I based mine on a CLC Westriver-180. It is heavier than a standard kayak, perhaps 100 lbs. It is a wet boat and even in light wind goes very well with a 7mtr rig.

In moderate winds I use a 5.5mtr rig and it can be scary if the wind gets up.

It has a proper pivoting centerboard.

A rig this size requires a good sized rudder, and it needs to be strong, My first time out the stresses on the rudder ripped the pintles out of the rudder head and I had to get home using a paddle bungied to the rear cross member for a rudder. An ordinary kayak style rudder will be totally useless on a rig this size.

You will most likely have to cover over the cockpit as the boat will just swamp with the freeboard available. I added freeboard to the topsides.

Go for it. It will be a fun project.
