Sounds like you just pulled it to tight around the boat or you didn't have the both sides of the fabric touching when you pushed the needle through. If you don't pull the fabric together and forward the two pieces of fabric don't line up just right. When you pull it tight you have stitch holes that are not inline with each other, that causes the pull hole.

Here is a seam I just did this morning. This is what you aiming for. I am not bragging, I was being extra careful to make sure I followed my own advice and it turned out really well. only 3 or 4 small holes. Now just to get my stitch size more consistent.
