When I scarf-join strips, I like to do a lot of them at once. My simple method:

1) Make the scarf angles on an overturned belt sander with a wood fence to achieve a consistent angle.

2) Match up strips with similar grain and color, so the joint doesn't show.

3) Smear a few drops of wood glue over the entire mating surfaces of both strips.

4) STAND THE STRIPS ON EDGE on the floor and clamp. See the photo below, showing 6 strips already clamped, and two on the lower right that will be next. Wait overnight.

Standing the strips on edge ensures the strips are aligned straight.
