As a kid I lived in London, England back in the 50's during the era of the great pea-soup fogs, or smogs as they became known. Finding your way in one of those was more than an art, it was a survival skill. I recall riding my motor-bike home one night; being nearer the front of my vehicle I was able to follow the curb and count the intersections so I always knew where I was, but it was tiring so I took a rest. A mile-long line of cars and trucks went by, gradually slowing: I had not realised all those people were following my tail-light! Much later I ran into such a fog in Toronto, of all places; that time I had a large car and it was much harder to find the curb after each intersection.
