: My question is- should the scarf be oriented on the canoe through
: the thickness or through the width when it's mounted to the
: hull?

Ideally it shouldn't matter but...
I now run the scarf 90 degrees to the direction of bending. So for canoe gunwales: it would be through the thickness. I used to run my scarves through the width but had a couple of them open up on me over the years. I had used TBIII on those. I know.. weird. Running the scarf at 90 degrees puts more of a moment on the scarf rather than a prying force.
