Actually a soft pencil writes on sanded plexiglass just fine and will wash off later too.

Used to make skylights from sanded plexi, far easier to sand the surface first then mark it for cutting.

A ROS (random orbit sander) works great for that, makes a nice frosted surface with fairly fine sand paper.
