I'm glad you got it back, and were not hurt in the process.

If anyone I don't know or don't trust tried to enter the workshop while I am busy I would make it clear that for safety reasons they should remain outside. I live in a safe area with limited access so it's not really a problem for me. However, you can get a very cheap, very loud compact alarm that hang onto a belt; one tug on the trigger cord and it will emit a deafening siren sound that is painful to the ears - way louder than a smoke alarm.
