If you cruise Björn's site there are photos of a couple of black pearls built in pine, including one in knotty.

Everyone is recommending pine, which is cool. I'm fine with that. It will turn orangey golden as it ages, and I kind of like that color over the color WRC develops as it ages.

However- I don't have my reference with me, but I believe basswood is lighter than pine, and closer to pine in price than WRC around here. It's a joy to work, which is not to say that pine isn't, but given the two I prefer basswood because it is not resinous. The resin and its smell get on my nerves after a while, and sometimes are irritating to my skin and lungs. No problems with basswood, and it bends pretty well. Way better than pine. Nick did a writeup of his Nymph canoe design in Wooden Boat just before his latest book, and it was made of basswood.
