I tried using graphite on a buildup for a fiberglass combing ring and wasn't pleased with the results. It was difficult to get an even black color and you have to be constantly mixing while you apply, otherwise the graphite settles. It just doesn't blend as well as you want it to.

What I found to work best, at least for even coloring, was a black wood die. A couple drops in the mix and the color came out great. It blended very well and the coloring was even. I haven't had any issues with the resulting ring. The die was a water based die that was specifically designed to be applied directly to wood to stain and/or mixed with finishes to change the coloring. If you want, I can get you the brand name, but it will be later as the bottle is in my shop at home.
