Skin-on-Frame: RETRACTABLE SKEG in SOF

Whats up everyone. things here in NY have been very un winter like to say the least.

well My merganser 17W is awaiting its spring launching its tired of napping up on top of the garage .

Im planning on starting another boat an SOF of some sort , Im wondering if anyone has tried to install a retractable skeg in one??

I know it may be precarious But wondering if this would work?? a fellow paddler and I were discussing the possibility Not traditional by any means but a theory and, well an 18Ft long boat (baidarka style) may not have a need for one? Your thoughts please!! im thinking long term Not But maybe feasible???

proposed procedure

1) place plywood on keel like for a hatch

2) after skinning cut slit out for skeg blade and staple down material to plywood using ss or monel staples.

3) seal area where fabric is stapled and then screw down a flat thin aluminum / stainless/ plastic or marine ply plate over/around the area after sealing the fabric. IE plenty of aqua seal, liquid nail or ??

the plate would protect the fabric and provide a wear surface and squeeze the gasketing compound Im wondering if it would stay watertight (using a commercial plastic skeg box like I did on my merganser)

then paint or varnish the skin as normal.

just a what if, But I like the concept. your thoughts please.

have a great day
