Yes- I would paint with regular Bullseye clear (or "blonde" if you don't buy Bullseye) shellac. Mixing shellac from flakes would be better, but that's probably more involved than you want. I don't like to use tape but I can definitely see how it can be tedious. For masking small things I use 3M Fineline tape. It doesn't stick hard enough to pull up any wood. You can get it in 1/4".
