This past season I have been using a Petrel skeg on my new Night Heron, could not be happier with it. Mine is offset from the keel about 1 1/2", no ill effects at all. Just before the cut was made in my new hull I was talking with a friend of mine who does some surfing. He said that when a surfboard is on a wave only the fin near the crest of the wave will be in the water. And the other fin is in the air until the board and wave become more level with each other. The surfer has lots of control either it be 1 or 2 fins in the water, both being offset. Now I know that the needs of the surfer and a kayaker in using a fin are different but the point is that having the final offset has no ill effect. This past summer my Night Heron got quite a work out, and at no time did the skeg become clogged with sand or other debris. Not that I try to make a habit of leaving the skeg down when I beach but it does happen, and no damage or binding to the fin other than a scratch or two on the fin. Tom C
