One of the issues with tape is it is commonly only available in only one weight, around 9 ounce. So using different weight tape on the seams requires cutting strips out of a roll of wider cloth. While this is possible, it is un-fun in a variety of ways.

From my perspective, one layer of 4 ounce cloth is easier than laying down a bunch of strips of 4 ounce. From the weight perspective, if you use 3 inch wide tape, that is the equivalent weight of a strip of 4 ounce cloth almost 7" wide. With 3 strips of tape down the length of the boat the weight savings is going to be minor. You still need to coat the whole interior with a couple coats of resin as well.

Tape also has nasty edges that never lay down flat. On the outside, these should be sanded smooth - very unpleasant job, on the inside you can leave them rough but you probably want to knock the edges down a bit. By glassing the whole boat with wide cloth, leaves a smooth surface, assures complete epoxy coverage, looks a lot better and provides welcome protection.
