started to wipe down with lacquer thinner..

Lacquer thinner dissolved the varnish!

Don't go for the harshest solvents first.

Water is a solvent.

Now go over your surfaces with steel wool and alcohol to remove the old compromised varnish.

Then wet sand with 220 wet/dry sandpaper and water until the sandpaper does not clog with old varnish.

Wet sand between coats with 220 only. Wipe clean with water and a sponge.

You can use a tack cloth light to remove dust before varnishing.
