One assumes, I suppose, that someone approaching a building project has done some research

One of the points I was trying to make was that no matter how much (online) research you do, you are unlikely to get an honest opinion about a particular design.

and has probably done some kayaking.

I think 'some' is the operative word. It seems to me that builders span the range from 'Grandad who has never paddled; building a boat for grandchild' to 'very experienced and capable paddler'.
